Top 9 Must-See Places in Greece

Today I’d like to take you on a captivating journey through the cradle of Western civilization – Greece. A country drenched in rich history, mythology, and topography so stunning that it’s an undeniable traveler's paradise. We’ll explore everything from the picturesque islands to the enchanting mainland, both renowned for their breathtaking beauty. No Greek journey is truly fulfilled without immersing yourself in the history of Athens, the capital and heart of ancient Greece. Transport yourself back in time to the Neolithic Period (7000-1700 BCE), the beginning of human settlements. The first stop – the Acropolis, where the Parthenon stands – a site of human habitation for over 3,000 years and is now visited by millions of people every year. This incredible attraction is an emblem of classical architecture.

Let’s stroll through the winding antiquitous streets of Plaka, one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Athens. At the foot of the Acropolis, you can indulge in hidden gems like remnants of Byzantine and Roman structures, or the Tower of the Winds – an ancient clocktower. This neighborhood is most popular for its shopping and dining, where you can savor the finest traditional Greek souvenirs and cuisine. 

Not far from the historic center of Athens is a narrative of human history at the National Archaeological Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts. Being one of the most significant archaeological museums globally, it offers visitors a comprehensive insight into the rich cultural heritage of Greece. Athens is truly a living testament to the evolution of civilization.

2. Santorini – A Picture-Perfect Paradise

I’m sure you’ve seen images of the iconic white-washed structures against the backdrop of the cerulean Aegean Sea. Santorini is as dreamlike in person as it is in images. Located on a caldera, a large volcanic crater, this awe-inspiring island was formed from a massive volcanic eruption over 3,600 years ago. 

This volcano has enriched many aspects of Santorini’s culture. The nutrient-dense volcanic soil is a key contributor to the distinct flavor of its renowned wines, as well as its unique black and red sand beaches. It’s a “must do '' to traverse the cliffside villages of Oia and Fira, where you’ll find Cycladic architecture, traditional tavernas, and unforgettable sunset views.

3. Crete – A Mosaic of History and Nature

Holding the title of the largest Greecian island, Crete is a captivating diverse landscape with a rich cultural heritage. Here is where you’ll find remnants of the ancient Minoan civilization, one of the earliest advanced civilizations in Europe. Walk the ruins of The Palace of Knossos, one of the most important archaeological sites associated with the Minoans.  

Bask in the rugged beauty of the Samaria Gorge, a natural wonder rich in biodiversity and home to several plant species that you can only find on the island. Due to its ecological sensitivity, there are regulations in place to manage the impact of tourism on the gorge. The number of visitors is controlled, and certain areas may be restricted during the breeding season of local fauna, so make sure to ask your travel agent about the best times to visit the gorge.

According to Greek mythology, Delphi was considered the meeting point of Zeus's eagles, which in turn was interpreted as the center of the earth. The Greeks believed Delphi was where the divine connected with the mortal, revered as the place where the earth (Gaia) communicated with the sky (Uranus).

5. Meteora – Monasteries in the Sky

Located in central Greece, Meteora presents a breathtaking otherworldly spectacle with monasteries perched atop towering rock formations  – a site that was undoubtedly one of my favorites during my Greece tour in 2020. These incredible monastic complexes that seem to be suspended between earth and sky were constructed in the 14th century.

As you follow the ancient pathways that wind their way to these divine abodes, a captivating panoramic view stretches across the vast landscape below. The monasteries of Meteora not only showcase remarkable architecture but also provide a profound spiritual encounter, transporting you to an era when monks sought solace and devotion amidst these secluded heights. 

This unique and extraordinary destination invites exploration into the melding of human ingenuity with the wonders of nature, leaving a lasting imprint of the monastic life that once flourished in this ethereal sanctuary.

6. Rhodes – Where History Meets Beauty

Surrounded by the embrace of the Aegean Sea, Rhodes unfolds as an island of historical fusion where medieval and ancient wonders intertwine. A stroll through the cobblestone streets of the medieval Old Town reveals a living history, adorned with medieval architecture, charming squares, and bustling markets. 

Venture to the Palace of the Grand Master, an imposing medieval fortress that narrates tales of knights and emperors. Uncover the archaeological marvel of Kamiros, an ancient city bearing witness to the island's classical past.

Another stop during my group travel experience to Greece in 2020 was located in the heart of the Cyclades – the island of Mykonos. Wandering through the narrow streets of Mykonos Town, where whitewashed buildings adorned with blue accents create a picturesque backdrop. Looking for a glimpse into the island’s maritime history?  Discover the iconic windmills that stand as sentinels overlooking the Aegean Sea. 

If you’re keen on exciting nightlife, Mykonos transforms into a playground of entertainment after dark, with beachfront clubs and bars igniting a lively atmosphere. 8. Nafplio -Echoes of Venetian Elegance 

Having a history marked by various battles due to its strategic location and changing rulers over the centuries, Nafplio is a scenic town with narrow streets and Venetian architecture on the Peloponnese peninsula. Stand where warriors once stood, and visit the well-preserved fortifications and historical sites that bear witness to Nafplio's fierce past.  

One particular site that dominates the skyline is the Palamidi Fortress, which stands as a testament to Nafplio's strategic significance. You can explore its summit, walking the stone steps that wind their way upward to be rewarded with views that stretch over terracotta rooftops and the Aegean Sea. 

9. Ancient Olympia - Where Legends Were Born  

Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. You can feel the spirit of athletic competition from ancient Greece as it oozes from the ruins. The Olympic Games started in 776 BCE, becoming a quadrennial tradition and uniting Greek city-states in friendly competition which promoted physical excellence and cultural exchange.  

The site's influence extended beyond sport. Political and philosophical discussions were held here during the Olympic truce. At the centerpiece of this historic site was the magnificent Temple of Zeus, housing the renowned gold and ivory statue of Zeus sculpted by Phidias, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ruins of Ancient Olympia continue to tell us the story of human achievement, Olympic ideals, and the legacy of this historic sanctuary.
