Day 7 | Milford Sound, New Zealand

Facts About Milford Sound.

Milford Sound/Piopiotahi is one of the most iconic places and most visited place in New Zealand, having roughly 1 million visitors each year. What’s interesting is that this sound is not actually a sound, but a fiord. It was named, mistakenly, by it’s geographic features.

This high traffic gem is part of Fiordland National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, spanning nine miles long and crafted from glaciation that took millions of years.

Here you’ll find marine wildlife including humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, seals, and penguins. Since there is a high level of rainfall and dense salt water, a layer of freshwater at the top contains tannins from the rainforests. This allows the filtration of sunlight, making the perfect thriving conditions for varieties of Black Coral. This is why the water of the fiord is a dark, ink-like color.

You’ll spend the day cruising through this beautiful body of water, enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
